Backgammon – Three Basic Schemes

In astonishingly simple terms, there are three main techniques used. You must be agile enough to hop between tactics almost instantly as the course of the game unfolds.

The Blockade

This comprises of creating a 6-thick wall of checkers, or at a minimum as deep as you might manage, to block in your opponent’s pieces that are on your 1-point. This is deemed to be the most suitable tactic at the start of the game. You can build the wall anyplace within your 11-point and your 2-point and then shift it into your home board as the game continues.

The Blitz

This is composed of closing your home board as quickly as as you can while keeping your competitor on the bar. For example, if your opposer rolls an early two and moves one piece from your 1-point to your 3-point and you then roll a five-five, you will be able to play six/one 6/1 8/3 eight/three. Your challenger is then in big-time trouble since they have 2 checkers on the bar and you have closed half your inner board!

The Backgame

This tactic is where you have 2 or higher checkers in your competitor’s inner board. (An anchor spot is a point occupied by at least two of your checkers.) It needs to be used when you are extremely behind as it much improves your opportunities. The strongest areas for anchors are towards your competitor’s lower points and either on adjoining points or with a single point separating them. Timing is crucial for a powerful backgame: besides, there’s no reason having two nice anchor spots and a solid wall in your own inner board if you are then forced to break apart this right away, while your opposer is moving their pieces home, owing to the fact that you don’t have any other spare checkers to move! In this situation, it’s more favorable to have checkers on the bar so that you might preserve your position until your opponent provides you an opportunity to hit, so it may be an excellent idea to attempt and get your opposer to get them in this case!
