Backgammon – 3 Basic Plans

[ English ]

In very simple terms, there are 3 chief techniques employed. You must be able to hop between strategies quickly as the action of the match unfolds.

The Blockade

This is comprised of building a 6-thick wall of checkers, or at a minimum as deep as you are able to manage, to block in your opponent’s checkers that are on your 1-point. This is considered to be the most suitable course of action at the start of the match. You can build the wall anyplace between your eleven-point and your 2-point and then move it into your home board as the match advances.

The Blitz

This involves closing your home board as fast as possible while keeping your competitor on the bar. e.g., if your opposer tosses an early 2 and shifts one piece from your one-point to your 3-point and you then toss a five-five, you can play six/one 6/1 8/3 eight/three. Your challenger is then in big-time trouble because they have 2 checkers on the bar and you have closed half your home board!

The Backgame

This tactic is where you have 2 or higher checkers in your competitor’s inner board. (An anchor spot is a position consisting of at least 2 of your pieces.) It should be played when you are decidedly behind as this strategy greatly improves your circumstances. The best areas for anchor spots are near your competitor’s smaller points and also on adjacent points or with a single point separating them. Timing is integral for an effectual backgame: after all, there’s no point having 2 nice anchors and a complete wall in your own home board if you are then required to break up this right away, while your competitor is moving their checkers home, considering that you don’t have other spare checkers to move! In this case, it is more favorable to have checkers on the bar so that you are able to maintain your position up until your opponent gives you a chance to hit, so it will be a wonderful idea to try and get your challenger to hit them in this case!
