Backgammon – 3 General Strategies

[ English ]

In extraordinarily general terms, there are three fundamental strategies employed. You want to be agile enough to hop between techniques quickly as the course of the game unfolds.

The Blockade

This consists of building a 6-thick wall of pieces, or at least as deep as you are able to manage, to block in your competitor’s pieces that are located on your 1-point. This is considered to be the most acceptable course of action at the start of the game. You can build the wall anyplace within your 11-point and your 2-point and then shift it into your home board as the match continues.

The Blitz

This is comprised of locking your home board as quick as possible while keeping your opponent on the bar. i.e., if your competitor tosses an early 2 and moves one checker from your one-point to your 3-point and you then toss a 5-5, you can play six/one six/one 8/3 8/3. Your challenger is now in big-time calamity since they have 2 checkers on the bar and you have closed half your inner board!

The Backgame

This strategy is where you have 2 or higher checkers in your opponent’s inner board. (An anchor spot is a position occupied by at a minimum two of your checkers.) It should be employed when you are significantly behind as it greatly improves your chances. The best locations for anchor spots are near your opponent’s lower points and also on adjoining points or with one point in between. Timing is crucial for a competent backgame: after all, there’s no point having 2 nice anchor spots and a solid wall in your own inner board if you are then forced to break up this straight away, while your opposer is shifting their checkers home, owing to the fact that you don’t have any other spare pieces to shift! In this situation, it is more tolerable to have checkers on the bar so that you might preserve your position up till your challenger provides you an opportunity to hit, so it may be a good idea to try and get your challenger to get them in this case!
