Backgammon – 3 Basic Strategies

[ English ]

In very simple terms, there are three fundamental strategies employed. You must be able to hop between game plans instantly as the course of the game unfolds.

The Blockade

This is composed of building a 6-thick wall of checkers, or at a minimum as deep as you might achieve, to lock in your opponent’s checkers that are located on your 1-point. This is considered to be the most adequate strategy at the begining of the match. You can build the wall anyplace inbetween your 11-point and your two-point and then move it into your home board as the game progresses.

The Blitz

This consists of locking your home board as quickly as possible while keeping your competitor on the bar. For example, if your opponent rolls an early two and moves one piece from your one-point to your 3-point and you then toss a five-five, you can play 6/1 6/1 eight/three eight/three. Your opposer is then in big-time trouble seeing that they have 2 pieces on the bar and you have locked half your inside board!

The Backgame

This tactic is where you have 2 or more checkers in your opponent’s home board. (An anchor is a position filled by at least 2 of your checkers.) It needs to be employed when you are significantly behind as this action much improves your opportunities. The better areas for anchors are close to your competitor’s lower points and either on abutting points or with one point in between. Timing is important for a competent backgame: at the end of the day, there’s no reason having 2 nice anchor spots and a complete wall in your own inner board if you are then required to dismantle this straight away, while your opposer is moving their pieces home, seeing that you don’t have other additional checkers to shift! In this case, it is more favorable to have pieces on the bar so that you might preserve your position until your challenger gives you an opportunity to hit, so it will be a great idea to try and get your challenger to hit them in this case!
