Backgammon – Three General Techniques

In extraordinarily general terms, there are 3 main strategies employed. You need to be able to switch techniques almost instantly as the action of the game unfolds.

The Blockade

This involves building a 6-thick wall of pieces, or at a minimum as deep as you are able to achieve, to barricade in the opponent’s checkers that are located on your 1-point. This is considered to be the most adequate procedure at the begining of the match. You can build the wall anywhere inbetween your eleven-point and your 2-point and then shift it into your home board as the match continues.

The Blitz

This is composed of locking your home board as fast as as you can while keeping your opponent on the bar. For example, if your challenger tosses an early two and moves one piece from your 1-point to your three-point and you then roll a five-five, you will be able to play six/one 6/1 eight/three eight/three. Your opponent is now in big-time trouble taking into account that they have two checkers on the bar and you have closed half your inner board!

The Backgame

This course of action is where you have two or more checkers in your opponent’s home board. (An anchor is a point filled by at a minimum 2 of your pieces.) It must be played when you are extremely behind as it much improves your circumstances. The best places for anchors are close to your opponent’s lower points and also on adjacent points or with a single point in between. Timing is integral for an effectual backgame: besides, there is no point having 2 nice anchors and a complete wall in your own home board if you are then required to break up this right away, while your opposer is moving their pieces home, considering that you don’t have other extra pieces to shift! In this situation, it is better to have checkers on the bar so that you can maintain your position until your challenger provides you an opportunity to hit, so it can be an excellent idea to try and get your opposer to hit them in this situation!
